ESA Space Optics Instrument Design &Technology Course

Optical engineering for space is a highly specialised profession in need of trained and experienced professionals. Technology evolution and market dynamics require the profession to stay up to date with new methodologies for the designing, manufacturing, and commissioning of high performance space optical instruments.

This inspired the European Space Agency (ESA) to organise two types of courses for professionals operating in the space optical engineering sector. The first is dedicated to “Space Optics Instrument Design” and the second to “Space Optics Instrument Technology”. The two courses alternate each year with the 2021 course focussing on Space Optics Instrument Technology.

The course lecturers consist of professionals with long standing experience in the sector. Their accessibility during the course gives participants a unique opportunity to deepen their knowledge with one-to-one meetings as well as planned lectures.

The course also gives plenty of opportunities for participants to develop a professional network. Sharing problems and discussing solutions is the way to develop optical engineers for the space community and space sector as a whole.

TechWorks Marine introductory online workshop on CoastEO

The Irish company TechWorks Marine signed a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) Investing in Industrial Innovation (InCubed) programme to develop an innovative coastal monitoring solution using Earth Observation (EO).

The activity, called CoastEO or Coastal Ocean Assessment, was kicked off in January 2020 with a duration of eighteen months.

On Wednesday 9 September 2020, TechWorks Marine is holding an online introductory workshop, 10:00-11:00 (CEST). The workshop is of interest to anyone who uses water quality information in their work or research. It will consist of a short 25 minute presentation followed by an open Q&A session.

The aim of CoastEO is to provide a complete coastal monitoring service by incorporating reliable in‑situ measurements and validated satellite EO data. This flexible service can be adapted to measured parameters, deployment methods and geographic coverage.

CoastEO’s purpose is to mitigate the common cost and coverage issues surrounding coastal and marine monitoring and provide robust data. CoastEO Mini-Buoy (1.23 m in height) can be easily deployed in coastal and freshwater environments and immediately start transmitting real-time data.

For further information, please visit the TechWorksMarine website or email queries to eimear.tuohy@techworks.ie.

ESA Φ-week gets digital

The Φ-week is an interactive conference organised by ESA with a focus on Earth Observation (EO) Open Science and Future EO. The conference is an opportunity for emerging space investors, tech leaders, entrepreneurs, space scientists and EO researchers to explore new prospects for cutting-edge technologies.

The Φ-week is hosted at the European Space Agency’s (ESA) ESRIN site in Italy. In 2019, the event gathered 600 people from 38 countries and included over 80 oral presentations, 150 posters, and 40 exhibitors. The Φ-week also included a variety of side events such as workshops, round tables, hackathons and start up tables.

This year’s event will be entirely virtual due to the COVID-19 restrictions and focus on the concept of “Digital Twin Earth’’ – an Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven digital replica of our planet. This replica leverages the full power of AI, Earth Science and Modelling, cloud computing and Earth-scale environmental, societal and economic data into actionable insights for scientists, political and economic decision makers.

Follow InCubed at the ɸ-week 2020:

  • “Downstream Industry for Digital Twin Earth – II” Session

Wednesday 30 September

Amanda Reagan, Head of the ɸ-lab Invest Office and responsible for InCubed management, will chair a session dedicated to the Downstream Industry for Digital Twin Earth with representatives of a few companies co-funded by InCubed such as Charlotte Kelly (Techworks Marine), and other commercial actors such as Peter Platzer (Spire), Adina Gillespie (GHG sat) and Marco Esposito (Cosine).

  • “Growing European Earth Observation Business: Funding Opportunities and the Investor Perspective” side event
